The 'double basket' rib stitch produces an attractive basketweave texture that's made up of blocks of stretchy ribbing.

Despite the interesting appearance, it seems to be quite a rare pattern. I hope I can make it a little more popular!

The best thing as far as beginners are concerned is that the pattern is created entirely out of knit and purl stitches...the downside, though, is that it's an 18 row pattern repeat!

I hope that doesn't put you off :)

You will need to cast on a multiple of 18 stitches, and then add 10 (I cast on 28 stitches in my video tutorial below).

Row 1 (RS): *k11, p2, k2, p2, k1

Repeat from * until there are 10 stitches left, then k10

Row 2: p1, k8, p1, *p1, (k2, p2) x 2, k8, p1

Repeat from * until the end of the row

Row 3: *k1, p8, (k2, p2) x 2, k1

Repeat from * until there are 10 stitches left, then k1, p8, k1

Row 4: p10, *p1, k2, p2, k2, p11

Repeat from * until the end of the row

Rows 5 - 8 are the same as rows 1 - 4, so now just repeat the above section of pattern.

Row 9: k

Row 10: (p2, k2) x 2, p2, *p10, (k2, p2) x 2

Repeat from * until the end of the row

Row 11: *(k2, p2) x 2, k2, p8

Repeat from * until there are 10 stitches left, then (k2, p2) x 2, k2

Row 12: (p2, k2) x 2, p2, *k8, (p2, k2) x 2, p2

Repeat from * until the end of the row

Row 13: *(k2, p2) x 2, k10

Repeat from * until there are 10 stitches left, then (k2, p2) x 2, k2

Rows 14 - 17 are the same as rows 10 - 13, so now just repeat the pattern section above.

Row 18: p

(Where RS = right side, k = knit stitches and p = purl stitches).
