Traditional Tulip Lace Pattern

Tulip lace - also called 'Quatrefoil Eyelet lace' - is a classic lace pattern that is especially popular for using in knitted baby items and blankets.

It's a 16 row pattern repeat, and the design is created from yarn over eyelets (holes) being arranged in diamond shapes all over. The video below walks you through the steps.

The Pattern:

To begin, cast on a multiple of 8 stitches, plus another 7.

Row 1 (RS): k

Row 2 & every other even-numbered row (WS): p

Row 3: k3 *yo, ssk, k6

Repeat from * until you have 4 stitches left, then yo, ssk, k2

Row 5: k1, *k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k3

Repeat from * until you have 6 stitches left, then k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k1

Row 7: Same as row 3

Row 9: k

Row 11: k7 *yo, ssk, k6

Repeat from * until the end of the row.

Row 13: k5 *k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k3

Repeat from * until you have 2 stitches left, then k2

Row 15: Same as row 11

Row 16: p

(Where RS = right side, WS = wrong side, k = knit and p = purl, yo = yarn over, k2tog = knit 2 together, ssk = slip slip knit)

Then repeat rows 1-16 as many times as you like :)

If you would like to copy the pattern I demonstrated in the video above - with a garter stitch border all of the way around, then you can follow this pattern instead:

Cast on a multiple of 8 stitches, plus 7.

Rows 1-5: k

Row 6 & every other even-numbered row in the pattern repeat below (WS): k4, purl until there are 4 stitches left, k4

Row 7: k7 *yo, ssk, k6

Repeat from * until you have 8 stitches left, then yo, ssk, k6

Row 9: k5, *k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k3

Repeat from * until you have 10 stitches left, then k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k5

Row 11: Same as row 7

Row 13: k

Row 15: k11 *yo, ssk, k6

Repeat from * until you have 4 stitches left, then k4.

Row 17: k9 *k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k3

Repeat from * until you have 6 stitches left, then k6

Row 19: Same as row 15

Row 20: k4, purl until there are 4 stitches left, k4

Repeat rows 7-20 as many times as you like, then finish with 4 rows of knit stitches. This will give you a garter stitch border, 4 stitches wide, all of the way around your tulip lace pattern.
